What can I expect from therapy with you?

Psychotherapy is not easily described. It varies depending on the problem you bring forward, your personality, and your strengths and areas of growth. There are many different methods I may use to deal with the problems that you hope to address.

Psychotherapy is not like a medical doctor visit. Instead, it calls for a very active effort on your part. For therapy to be most successful, you will have to work on things we talk about both during our sessions and beyond our sessions; at home for example.

Psychotherapy can have benefits and risks. Therapy may involve discussing unpleasant and challenging aspects of your life; as a result, you may experience uncomfortable feelings like sadness, guilt, anger, frustration, loneliness, and helplessness.

On the other hand, psychotherapy has also been shown to have benefits for people who go through it. Working through those emotions requires a certain amount of vulnerability and courage. Therapy often leads to better relationships, solutions to specific problems, and significant reductions in feelings of distress. But there are no guarantees of what you will experience.

Our first session or two will involve an evaluation of your needs. By the end of the evaluation, I will be able to offer you some first impressions of what our work will include and a treatment plan to follow.

The therapeutic relationship begins at this point, and a partnership ensues that is guided through a judgement-free and unconditional regard for you. My work with you may involve referrals to books, articles or workbooks. It may involve keeping a mood log, for example, or recommended apps.

I will not provide advice on what choices or what is best for you. I will, however, help you make your own decisions on what is best for you and your life. You will draw your own conclusions.

I incorporate an eclectic approach to therapy including but not exclusive to mindfulness-based stress reduction/management, insight therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy.

How long will I be in therapy?

The length of therapy is dependent on you and your needs. In therapy, I will help you to identify your personal short-term goals. Timebound goals will be developed for about 12 weeks, and long-term goals may be six months to a year or more. We will continually assess for progress, change and growth. I encourage fostering independence and autonomy on your part, so ideally you will not engage in therapy for years.

However, there may be times when we mutually decide upon completing treatment. Then some adversity or life issue brings you back into treatment. I am always here to receive you. I am also open to long-term therapy for those who benefit from maintaining support and the therapeutic relationship.
